In a statement issued on its website November 9, the US embassy in Cameroon alerts US citizens over a possible suspension of flights from Yaoundé. The message indicated that major airlines threatened to stop direct flights into and out of Nsimalen airport. The suspension which could start November 15, is due to a failure to come to agreement over security screening procedures with the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority.
“The civil aviation authority (CCAA) and the airlines are not finding an understanding point,” a source said. The two sides also have different opinions about security control issues. CCAA is, among others, responsible for the supervision of civil aviation’s security and safety. In need to avoid inconveniences, the US embassy set a list of measures to be adopted by the citizens.
Actions to Take:
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Have a plan to travel to Douala if you need to undertake international travel.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Arrange travel plans to mitigate risk of potential disruption.
During recent rehabilitation works of the Douala airport, protection instructions were given by the US embassy. No official statement was issued on the matter by CCAA.
